Great Hall, Gryffindor table

Ginny yawns as she pours herself a glass of milk. She was up late reading last night, and she promises herself she wont do it again - she knows the morning will drag along terribly.

Looking around for someone she knows, she spots Harry entering the Great Hall - without Ron or Hermione. There's a strange look on his face, but Ginny decides not to ask him what's up. She remembers Luna telling her in Library that Harry must have good reasons to keep things from them.

"Hi, Harry!" she says as cheerfully as she can.

Harry can't quit thinking about the night before. He didn't really speak to Ron this morning, since what he really wants to do is pretend everything is as usual, and Ron isn't having it. So instead he's communicating mostly in grunts and shrugs.

He sees Ginny at the table and his mood is lightened a bit. "Hi." He sits down next to her, and watches, still a bit sleepy, as his food appears on his plate. He looks out the window as he takes a bite. The snow is piling up against the windows, and if a person could get out, they couldn't go far. "This weather is getting ridiculous."
Ginny nods. "I know... it's almost uncanny. Honestly, I never saw so much snow in these parts before. We can't even go outside to build a snowman or anything." Like playing Quidditch with you...

Realising this isn't the best way to cheer Harry up, she quickly changes the subject. "So, how have you been keeping busy lately?"
Harry turns to look at her, hesitating. He's been having extra classes with Tonks, but he can't tell anyone that. He's having Occlumency, but that's a secret too. Seems like everything I'm doing is a secret.

He shakes his head. "Not much . . . just classes, Remedial Potions, that sort of thing. Rather bored, really." Especially since my best friends are attached at the face lately. Ginny isn't though . . .

He gives her a small smile, eyes brightening, and then looks outside. "When's the last time you dug a snow tunnel?"
Ginny looks at him wide-eyed, then grins. "A snow tunnel? Harry, you can't be serious..."

The mischievous glimmer in his eyes, she knows, is mirroring her own. "How do you suppose we could do that?" she asks, nudging him slightly.

"Well, provided we can budge a door open . . . the best tools for digging a snow tunnel are hands with gloves on." He smirks. "Course, I bet if we melted it with our wands instead, it'd ice over a bit and then we'd have an ice cave instead. Like to try?" His expression is mischievous, and he finds he feels a lot better, now that he's decided to do something other than mope.
Ginny feels her heart lift. Not only does Harry look happy, but he's asking her to spend time with him - it'll be just the two of them.

Okay, don't read anything into it... just be glad he's out of his funk.

"I'd love to," she replies. "Let's go as soon as we finish breakfast."
He smiles at her and downs his orange juice, then finishes his breakfast in a hurry. He's not quite sure why, but he's feeling better than he has in awhile.

When it looks like she's done eating, he grins. "Ready?"
Ginny nods and stands from the table.

"So, which door should we try?" she says as they leave the Great Hall side by side. "The main entrance is locked, but there must be another way out of here..."
Harry nods. "Let's try one of the exits into the courtyard along the outside corridor. They might even be keeping that corridor clear . . . we can try anyway."

As he walks beside her to one of the doors that open to the outside, he pulls his gloves from his pockets, then asks her, "Are you going to be warm enough?"

She looks so pretty. She always does. Well, just because Ron and Hermione are too busy snogging to pay me any notice, doesn't mean I have to be alone, does it? He smiles at her.
Ginny smiles back and gets lost for a moment in his brilliant green eyes. Harry is looking at her in a way that makes her stomach flutter.

"Er - yes - I'm quite warm, thank you," she replies, fumbling with the words.

She looks around to check that the corridor is deserted, then tries to turn the massive handle of one of the doors. She pushes hard to open it and grunts.

"I think I'm going to need help here," she tells Harry.
Harry moves to Ginny's side and gives the door a hard push with his shoulder and hands, grimacing as the door slowly moves, creaking against the packed snow. Once it's open about a foot, Harry peers out into a slate-grey sky, snowflakes descending everywhere, some of them making their way beneath the overhang, and sees that there's only a foot or two of snow in the outside corridor. He takes out his wand and vanishes a thick section of it.

He smiles at Ginny. "We just need to clear the bit around the door."
Ginny works with Harry to vanish some snow, feeling the cold bite at her face. Still, it feels incredibly good to breath some fresh air again.

Once the area around the door is free, she steps outside and grins. "Freedom, finally!" They can't stray very far, but it's better than staying coped up inside.

Besides, it's likely they won't run into anybody here.
Harry steps into the outside corridor and looks around. The snow beyond the arched pillars rises a number of feet above the half-wall that forms the corridor, looking almost as if it's been cut with a knife, though some of it spills over onto the walkway, covering the ground in a low sea of snow. Above them, beyond the roof, the wind swirls huge gusts of snow about and he can tell it'd be cutting at their skin . . . but down here, with the protection of Hogwarts on one side and a wall of snow on the other, it's surprisingly calm, if quite cold. Everything is shades of grey and muted white, hardly any sunlight filtering through the thick blanket of clouds above.

He turns to Ginny, and when he sees that her cheeks are bright pink, he gets the odd idea that he'd like to put his arms around her.
"I wish the snow would stop... but still, it's kind of nice here, isn't it?"

Ginny turns to Harry and catches his gaze. She can't help but blush, making her already pink cheeks turn a darker shade of red. It's almost like being back in her earlier years at Hogwarts... but this time, she's pretty sure Harry doesn't see her as a little girl anymore.
Harry can't quit looking at her. "Are you sure you're warm enough?"

I'm tired of being lonely.
